Makarios Farms

Over the past couple of years we acquired four breeds of heritage ducks: Khaki Campbells, Buffs (or Buff Orpingtons), Saxony and Silver Appleyard. All of these ducks have unique characteristics that made them appealing to us, including the fact that they are all able to help control the slugs and bugs that roam over the farm.

We allow our ducks to range on the property for the majority of the year, and we feed soy free, certified organic feed.

Khaki Campbell ducks are known as prolific layers and belong to the lightweight category. They are excellent foragers and typically lay over 300 eggs per year. During the winter, our Khakis have been known to lay eggs even through the snowiest days.

Buffs are a medium weight bird that are used for both egg laying and as meat birds. Like the Khakis, they are fairly quiet and are good foragers.

Silver Appleyards are a large breed duck that are good egg layers as well as meat birds.

Saxony ducks are also large, dual purpose birds. They are the rarest of our breeds, with the Livestock Conservancy estimating less than 5000 birds worldwide.
