Makarios Farms

We have three breeds of heritage turkeys that free range on the property for the majority of the year. All of our breeds are capable of flight (though the toms tend to fly less than the females as they hit mature weight), and of brooding their own young. We feed our turkeys soy free, certified organic feed.

We started with Beltsville Small White turkeys in 2022, followed by Standard Bronze turkeys and White Hollands in 2023.

As their name implies, the Beltsvilles are on the smaller side and are good for smaller families or every-day turkey dinners. The Standard Bronze and White Holland are on the larger side, with toms reaching about 25 pounds as young birds for the table.

Check the shop for availability of young birds or whole processed turkeys.

The difference between heritage birds and commercial turkeys is noticeable. We’ve found the heritage birds to be more moist and flavourful than the turkeys found in stores. Preparation and cooking for these turkeys is slightly different than for commercial birds, so it helps to search specific directions for cooking heritage turkeys when it comes time to prepare your meals.
